Her (2023) presents two painted interventions on vintage Playboy cutouts, framed together as a single, unified work. Using acrylic paint, the artist reclaims pre-existing images of women, overlaying gesture, abstraction, and intentional disruption onto a historically loaded source material.

The act of painting directly onto the magazine pages complicates themes of visibility, desire, authorship, and agency. Figures that once functioned as objects of consumption are recontextualized through mark-making that both obscures and emphasizes form, shifting the viewer’s relationship from passive looking to active consideration. The paint asserts presence—interrupting the original imagery while allowing fragments of it to remain legible.

Presented as a pair, the works operate in dialogue, balancing repetition and variation while reinforcing the tension between image and intervention. Unified within a single frame, Her reads as both critique and transformation—an intimate yet confrontational examination of femininity, representation, and control embedded within mass-media culture.
