Los Angeles, CA - ALLGORITHIM is pleased to present A Violent Display of Affection, a solo exhibition of new oil paintings by Marko Ristic, on view May 7 through June 18, 2022. The works explore themes of love, affection, and emotion through abstract body figures, each character portrayed in its own setting and holding, in Ristic's hands, a true and singular sense of being.

Marko Ristic (b. 1993, South Florida) is a painter based between Michigan and New York City. The son of immigrants, Ristic is a first-generation American who grew up balancing the duality of his Serbian heritage against the country in which he was raised. That duality was not abstract: while he sat in an American classroom, Belgrade was under bombardment, and at home he learned of the friends and family he had lost. Time later spent in Belgrade only deepened the tangled perception that came to define his youth - a perception shaped directly by the opposition between the two countries he called home, one under fire, the other having instituted it.

That history informs the emotional register of A Violent Display of Affection without ever illustrating it directly. Rendered through abstracted body figures, the paintings hold love and affection as forces every bit as capable of violence as tenderness, each canvas its own contained world for a character to inhabit.
